This year has been an incredible year for Sony: the PS4’s game library has finally reached maturation, the company will soon bring in its impressive Virtual Reality Headset, which will be launched at the beginning of 2016, and there are plenty of spectacular PS4 games waiting to be launched.
But gamers have never been the most patient kind, especially as they prepare to invest in a new console. They want to know what’s hot, right now. The good news is that there are more than a handful of cool games out on the PS4. We decided to review some new comers as well as old timers to create a healthy selection of top PS4 games that you should definitely not miss. Here they are:
If you’d rather indulge in some online games for PC, you should also check out our top picks.
1. Bloodborne – 10/10
Taking the first spot in our Top PS4 games is Bloodborne, a thrilling PS4 exclusive game, developed by the creators of Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were to become the game of the year. Bloodborne took all the good things from Dark Souls, improved upon a few others, and became the perfect example of action-packed RPG that will keep you glued to your controller for hours. The story revolves around the city of Yharnam, which is plagued by mysterious illnesses. In Bloodborne you will experience madness, darkness, fear, danger and death like never before.
This game will take you out of your comfort zones and make you do things you will probably be too afraid to. One of the things that makes Bloodborne an incredible game is the multitude of secrets that you need to uncover in order to progress with the story. In the underbelly of the city you will have to fight with frightening monsters by utilizing a limitted arsenal of weapons. This means that strategical thinking, reflexes and ability to discern right from wrong are determining factors in your adventure.
2. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – 10/10
I’ve been a huge fan of the Witcher series since the first game came out, and I have to admit that Geralt’s thrilling adventure has never been as captivating as it is in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. When the second game came out (Witcher 2: Assasin of Kings), it wasn’t a roaring success, but it bore the hallmark of a full-fledged RPG. I can truly say that Witcher 3 is a master-piece in every sense of the word: Geralt’s world is absolutely breath taking (especially thanks to the day-night system and ambient sounds), the game-play is extremely intense, all the stories (including side quests) are interesting, the combat system has been fine-tuned to become more exciting, and the soundtrack is to die for.
If there is one thing negative thing I have to say about Witcher 3 is the fact that it has a few bugs here and there, but nothing that would disrupt your experience. The Witcher 3 is definitely one of the top PS4 games, and an instalment that you should definitely not miss.
3. Bastion – 9/10
Bastion was released for PC and Xbox 360 in the summer of 2011. The game’s developer, Super Giant Games, announced in December, 2014 that the game will be released for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. Bastion may be considered an old game, especially since its PS4 version is a simple translation of the original game, but it’s worthy of all the accolades it received since it was released.
If you haven’t played Bastion before, I guarantee that it will renew your love for narrative exploration and have you gasping for air at the beautiful and lush 2D artwork. In the game, you play ‘The Kid’, as he is lovingly referred to, the sole survivor of the Calamity. Your goal is to revitalize the world and create a safe haven in the midst of chaos.
4. Mortal Kombat X – 8.5/10
Some might feel that our fourth pick for the Top PS4 games roundup is undeserving, especially considering that the game’s MetaCritic score is lower than that of others, but I believe that Mortal Kombat X is, not only the pinnacle of all Mortal Kombat games, but also one of the best combat gams available on PS4 (if not the best). Before the launch of MK 10, it felt like the series would forever lag behind fighting games such as Street Fighter.
Mortal Kombat 10 has been polished to perfection and enhanced with beautiful, dynamic environments that will make it difficult for you to concentrate. The ‘crem de la crem’ remain the exaggerated X-ray attacks that will let you ravel in the brutal executions performed by different characters, and the hard-to-pull-off fatalities that will give you the ultimate satisfaction of having destroyed your enemy.
5. Grand Theft Auto V
The remastered version of Grand Theft Auto V isn’t your typical, run-of-the-mill re-release. It’s not just about adding a few new textures and improving some environmental effects. Forget about all these things. Everything in GTA V’s graphical department has been tweaked and improved, from the smallest facial features, to the already-polished details of the open world. But this is not all. Rockstar Games also added an exciting first-person mode which makes GTA V feel like a completely new game, and takes the term of immersion to a whole new level.
And then there’s the heists, oh the heists, with their careful planning and the build-up of anticipation. Did we forget anything? Oh yes, GTA online. The world of GTA online is so vast that it’s impossible to discover it all, at the very best you will get to scratch its surface. In the online game mode you can compete with 29 other players and make the city your playground. Is GTA V worth buying again? Absolutely yes. We believe that it begs to be played.
6. Grim Fandango: Remastered
When one refers to the classics of the adventure genre, they usually choose one of two games: The Longest Journey, by Ragnar Tornquist, or Grim Fandango, by Tim Schafer. While the first game received a PC and mobile version several years ago, Grim Fandango slowly sank into the pit of nothingness. Until now. The remastered version for Grim Fandango is now available on console and PC.
Those who couldn’t get their hands on the original 1998 CD never had the chance to play Grim Fandango until now, so we don’t want to spoil too many juicy details. In terms of graphics, the game hasn’t changed much, but it is as interesting as always, despite its 90s appearance. Other than that, Grim Fandango remains the same adventure game, with difficult puzzles, brilliant voice acting and humorous scenes. If you love classics, you’ll love Grim Fandango.
7. Batman: Arkham Knight
If you want to take on the role of the elusive Batman and save Gotham from the forces of evil once and for all, you will finally get your chance with Batman: Arkham Knight. This is arguably the most ambitious and most successful Batman game in the series, and by this measure, it is also the number one superhero game to this day. Rocksteady’s spectacular trilogy comes to a perfect close with its third instalment.
There are many positive things to say about Arkham Knight, but probably the best one is the addition of the, wait for it, Batmobile. Rocksteady listened to its fans and gave them the one thing that was actually missing in the series. The game is dark, mysterious, thrilling and rewarding. It’s worth playing!
8. Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster
The last mention on our Top PS4 games roundup is Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD, which I believe is the best way to re-experience the universe of Spira. Last year, the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions of the game received improvements that propelled the game away from the bulky PS2 era graphics and towards the future, and fans thought that this would be the end of it. However, FF received a second improvement for its PS4 version that adds even more finesse and soft details to the game.
A lot of changes have been made to the graphics of the game: enemies and characters have been retouched, the environment received clear improvements and everything feels more alive. However, the gameplay hasn’t changed too much, which means that you still won’t be able to skip the annoying cut-scenes. All in all, Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster is the perfect way to relive the world of FF.
