Ever wondered how you can sign up for Uber and become a full-time driver using your own car? Follow us and we’ll show what you need to do to get started on your new Uber job.
What is Uber?
Uber can be described as a peer-to-peer cab service, meaning that you don’t have to be a seasoned taxi driver to take ride requests. The whole thing started back in 2008, in Paris, when Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick tried to order a ride, but there was none available.
And so, they came up with an ingenious, but simple idea: you press a button, and a ride comes right to your front door. Since then, the company expanded into more than 404 cities all over the globe, and it contracts both seasoned and novice drivers.
Uber’s core value revolve around fast response time and a friendly work environment. This means that at a simple press of a button, a car will arrive to take you to your desired destination and that you don’t necessarily have to be a taxi driver to apply for the job.
In fact, Uber encourages both experienced and newbie car drivers to apply for the job opening. As they describe the experience, it is an excellent opportunity to earn some extra cash during your free time and the hours are not that bad.
Does it start to sound like something worth checking out?
How do I sign up for Uber?
Before signing up, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First of all, do a little research to see if Uber operates in your location. You can do that by accessing the “cities” section on Uber’s homepage. In the text box that appears, type in your city’s name or your zip code and the bot will automatically determine if Uber is present in that area.
Zoning can also be a significant obstacle. Uber has well-defining areas of operation in each major city. If you are outside the field of operation, you might not receive orders, meaning that you’ll sometimes have to drive to a more crowded area in order to get started. Keep these aspects in mind when you want to sign up for Uber.
Another thing to be taken into consideration is the eligibility criteria. In order to apply for a job at Uber, you must fulfill certain requirements:
- The driver must be at least 21 years old;
- You must possess a valid driver’s license and car insurance policy.
- You must own an IPhone 4S or an Android smartphone. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can always rent one from Uber for 10 dollars per week.
- Your car model must have been manufactured in 2000 or later, and it must have four doors.
- The personal car must not be salvageable to sign up for Uber.
Now, if you meet all these requirements, it’s time to figure out what Uber branch suits your needs.
- uberX: the low-cost branch where everyone can apply. The requirements are the same with those stated above.
- uberXL: service dedicated to large groups. This time, the driver must possess a bigger vehicle to get started. The main advantage of this option is that you can charge higher cab fares.
- uberBLACK: to apply for this branch you must be an experienced driver and possess a luxury sedan like a Toyota Camry or a Lincoln Town Car Executive.
- uberSUV: drivers owning an SUV can charge more per mile and per hour than those enlisted in the uberBLACK branch
- uberTAXI: a service dedicated to taxi drivers.
If you’ve figured out which branch suits you best, it’s time to move on to the registration process.
Create an Uber driver account.
Head on over to Uber’s official website and look for the “drive” button. After you’ve clicked on it, you’ll be redirected to the registration page where you will have to fill out some details like you first and last name, a password of your choice, the city you want to drive in and an additional field where you have to tell Uber from where you’ve heard about the company.
If one of your buds is a registered Uber driver, he might send you an invitation code, which you can use in the registration process. Hit the submit button, and you would have made the first step.
Depending on the vehicle you plan to use, there are two steps:
- For personal vehicles, just click the “Next” button and head on over to city selection.
- For taxis and livery vehicles you can check out the box called “I plan to drive a livery or taxi vehicle.”
Submit basic car information
The next step requires you to fill in some details on your vehicle. Try to be as honest as possible when filling in this sheet, because Uber is going to run a background check on you.
Allow Uber to perform a background check on you
After submitting your car info sheet, the Uber registration page will ask you to enter your social security number. This is needed to run a basic background check on you like the criminal record, education record and status of medical insurance. Funtorutnately this process is vital if you want to sign up for Uber.
If you’ve been fined for running the red light or for speeding, you might still be eligible for the job. However, if you’ve been convicted of drunk driving and driving under the influence of illegal substances, you’ll be automatically disqualified.
Download the mobile application
After you’ve entered your SSN, Uber will redirect you to the next page where you can get the download link for the application. Click on the “Send download link”, and the application will automatically be downloaded to your smartphone.
When the downloading process is finished, you will be redirected to the document upload section. Start by making clear photos of your car’s documents: driver’s license, vehicle insurance policy, vehicle registration, and the inspection form.
Download the picture on your computer and upload them into the application by clicking on “choose files” and by clicking on the blue camera icon.
Wait until you hear from Uber
If all the documents are in order, you should hear soon from Uber. Don’t worry if it takes some time. Keep in mind that you are not the only one applying for the job. If everything is in order, you will be contacted by an Uber representative to schedule an interview or you’ll receive an email, in which Uber states that you’re ready to go.
This is all you have to do to sign up for Uber. Keep these tips in mind, be honest when filling out those forms and you’ll be out driving passengers around in no time.
