Whether you are ready or not, the much-promised virtual reality games are here. A few years ago, if you talked to someone about playing VR games, he would’ve probably told you to say hello to Captain Picard while you’re at it.
But now, virtual reality managed to surpass the technological aspect and become a second reality. While most apps and games developed for VR are still bulky and unresponsive, there are some great games out there that want to take advantage of this new technology.
Before talking about games and VR fantasies, we should say a few words about platforms. Okay, so there’s like a whole library of games out there to play, but what do we play them with? Stick with us for a short presentation on VR Gaming Platforms.
Platforms for Virtual Reality Games
No one can start to talk about virtual reality without mentioning the name of Oculus Rift. The virtual reality headset was designed by Palmer Lucky, thanks to a crowdfunded Kickstarter campaign and bought by Facebook for a whopping 2 billion dollars.
What’s so neat about Oculus Rift? It looks great, and, on top of that, the in-game movement is fantastically fluid thanks to its 3D image capture sensor. Unfortunately, the device will be shipped with a standard Xbox One controllers, Facebook delaying the release date of the hand device later this year.
Rift comes along with a price tag of 600 dollars.
Our pick in games to play with Oculus Rift: EVE: Valkyrie, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, Chronos, Lucky’s Tale, Superhot and Surgeon Simulator.
Sony PlayStation VR
With a price tag of 349 pounds, this is the first headset which makes 120 fps gaming possible. The PlayStation VR comes equipped with 5.7-inch OLED screen and an improved refresh late. It might be a bit pricier than Oculus Rift, but the experience offered by this headset is truly immersive.
Our choices in games for PlayStation VR: The Deep, Dreams, Eagle Flight, RIGS: Mechanized Combat Rig.
Pump up your VR experience with this bad boy developed by HTC. Packed with more than 70 motion sensors which are capable of picking up even the most subtle body movement, this is your best bet for your VR fantasies.
Vive is also equipped with an improved head tracker, which can detect 360 degrees motion as well as a hand controller. Moreover, along with the headset, the user will receive three free games. Vive will hit the market with a price tag of 800 bucks.
Our choices in games for Vive: Vanishing Realms, Job Simulator, Hover Junkers, The Gallery Episode 1: Call of the Starseed, The Lab.
Samsung Gear VR
And there’s a cheap alternative to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. For those of you who are unwilling to part with a significant amount of cash, you can try out the Samsung VR experience. How does it work: just slide your Samsung Galaxy Phone inside the device, connect it to your phone using the microUSB connector and start playing.
Our choice in games for Samsung Gear VR: Dead Secret, Smash Hit VR, Land’s End.
Google Cardboard VR
A makeshift virtual reality device. The principle behind it is simple: you have a Cardboard box, some lenses and a bunch of applications. Just slide your phone into the box and VR away. With a price tag of 30 dollars, it’s the first choice in cheap-end VR rendering devices.
Great games for Google’s Cardboard VR: Bombsquad VR, End Space VR, Hardcore VR.
Honorable mentions in the Platforms category: Virtuix Omni, the VR treadmill. The Virtuix Omni was promising at first, but the project has managed to somehow disappoint its fans. If the device were to be released, it would have granted the user the most immersive gaming experience ever.
Coupled with the hand controllers and the head tracking device, the player would have actually felt that he was there, running for his life or traversing vast distances to fulfill his quest. Don’t give up on your dream yet, because the Virtuix Omni treadmill VR project is still on the board.
