As a matter of fact, last time we checked there were over 900.000 thousand free Android apps on the market, and another few thousands on the Apple market. Granted, most of them are lame rip-offs of costly apps, or frustrating cases of omg-why-doesn’t-this work disasters.
But who cares? It’s free stuff! For every 20 unsuccessful experiments there is at least one gem that is worth all the hassle. In other words, there are at least 45.000 thousand apps that you can enjoy for free. We took the time to review some of the most popular free apps on the market. Of course, we didn’t even come close to checking all the apps on the Android and Apple markets, but the following suggestions will definitely cover all your basic needs.
Chances are that you are already using apps like Facebook, Instagram and Spotify, so we will not be covering all the mainstream apps. If you haven’t installed them yet, you should know that these are must-haves for the social savvy smartphone user. Combine them with the best smartphone devices and you will have one powerful combo!
We admit that these is sort of a predictable addition to our list, but Skype is just too useful to pass up on. Sure, it has a plethora of cool features that make voice-calling over the internet extremely entertaining, but the basic principle of being able to communicate with your friends anywhere and anytime is already enough to make you want to use it. This app is particularly useful for business people and employees who have to constantly check-in with the headquarters for status updates. Skype is world-changing in the way that it resolves communication issues.

To be honest, I’ve never been very good at organizing myself. I also never thought that one crummy little app would be able to help me sort through all the chaos. Out of disbelief, and with a desire to prove my friend’s that it is impossible, I installed Evernote. Much to my surprise, I was finally starting to keep of tracks of the things I have to do. Evernote is charming in its simplicity and the sheer number of useful features it has will help you significantly increase productivity levels. For those who know, it’s similar to Google Keep, but it has several interesting particularities. For example, you can record yourself when you get an idea for a project, set reminders, create to-do-lists, take snapshots of things and organize them in a very personal way. It also has a great and user-friendly interface.

Any sensible person in this world has some sort of weather app installed on his/her smartphone. The problem is that weather apps are a dime a dozen and so many of them are absolutely awful. SO how does one pick the perfect app? We believe that AccuWeather is among the best free Android apps for weather forecasts. That’s because it comes with an extensive set of customizable features that other weather apps do not have. For example, you can turn on tools such as weather by the minute (for real-time forecasts), home screen widgets for different locations and many more.

#3 Google Translate
Google Translate may not be able to perfectly translate everything you want, but at the moment it is crushing all other translation tools. Google Translate is capable of offering clunky paragraph translations for roughly 70 languages via text input, symbols, spoken words and even text recognition through camera. The output also comes under the form of written text or speech.
Google Translate is available on the Android App store for free, and I recommend you to download it especially if you’re planning on travelling or if you are working with foreign languages. Although it works automatically through Wi-Fi, you can also download various language packages for offline use.

#4 Autodesk Pixlr
We’ve always been impressed with Autodesk’s software, but we we’re never expecting the company to release such a comprehensive tool for smartphones. If you take plenty of photos on your device you absolutely need to install Autodesk Pixlr. It is safe to say that this app sets the standard for post-editing capabilities on the Android Market. A few features include, but are not limited to, creating collages of photos, adding overlays, frames, stickers, text and filters.

Are you familiar with the IFTTT language? It means If This then That and it represents a perfect way of automating almost any task on your devices. We were really excited to hear that the desktop version of the software would receive an Android counter-part. What IFTTT does is very simple: it completes actions based on certain triggers. All you have to do is set the triggers and effects and the app will take care of the rest.
Example: If *new photo* then*store on Dropbox*

If you’re a social media lunatic like me, then you Everypost is a must-have app for you. The hardest thing for me was to streamline my Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest accounts (yes, I have them all). Everyposts will let you register multiple accounts through the same app in order for you to manage them all at the same time. Of course, you can post on each social network individually, but you can also schedule posts for all of them. You can even connect your Dropbox and mail address to Everypost. Once you start using this app you will wonder how you ever managed to live without it.

VLC is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best media player in the world. I’ve been using it ever since it came out on desktop version and I was delighted to hear that an Android app will soon come out for it. VLC can play absolutely any type of media file you have. Granted, the software for smart-phones is still in beta, but it’s already more than capable of handling most challenges.

#10 Greenify (App Hibernator)
Another utility app you will be happy to have on your device is Greenify. What it does is pretty basic: it will tell you what apps to put to sleep in order to help you extend battery life and we all know how fast the battery drains from high-end smartphones. Another nifty feature that Greenify has is the auto-hibernation mode which will further prolong your battery life.

BEST FREE APPS FOR iOS
The Apple market also has a few interesting free apps that you might not have learned about. Here are some of our favorties:
VSCO Cam will enable you to take better pictures with your iPhone than ever before. The app has already been upgraded for the latest version of iOS and includes features such as shutter speed, white balance, focus or exposure compensation for advanced smart-phone photography. It is also possible to edit your photos with the tool’s post-editing features (example: you can adjust the strength of each fix). If you are passionate about photography you should definitely play around with the VSCO Cam app a bit. Once your image is complete and ready for sharing, you can post it on the VSCO community page, Instagram or Facebook.

There are so many cool things that you can do with your smartphone. All you need is the right apps. We’ve recently stumbled upon an interesting augmented reality app, called Wikitude, which will make sure that you never get bored in your city again. The concept behind it is simple: it pulls out small information tabs for landmarks, museums, restaurants, pubs etc. based on what your camera is pointed towards. In addition to this, you can add filters on Wikitude, to only display results that are relevant for you. Assuming that you will get bored of the augmented reality feature, you will be happy to know that Wikitude also has a few nice games like Bubble Tap and Alien attack.

If you’re not the motivated kind when it comes to working out, you will most definitely enjoy Breeze, a free app developed by RunKeeper. This is yet another example of simple concept implemented in an extremely useful app. Breeze will track your daily activity (like number of steps and goals) through the iPhone’s A7 chip. What Breeze does better than its competitors is the fact that it customizes your goals based on the activity from your previous week.
This makes it possible for users to break down their performance and reward themselves for extra motivation. Also, while charts and graphs are visually appealing, they kind of side-track the user from the main goal: to maintain a healthy and active life-style. Breeze gets rid of these graphs to make more space for motivation.

#4 Doorsteps Swipe
You have probably already heard about Tinder, the dating app for people in your area. Well, you’re about to meet the Tinder of real-estate. Doorsteps Swipe is the perfect free tool that every person looking for a new home or apartment needs. As you can probably already imagine, all properties can be swiped left or right (to save for later viewing or to pass). Information such as pet policy, number of rooms and amenities will also be displayed for saved apps.
One thing that I found particularly useful about Doorsteps swipe is the fact that it analyzes your swiping behavior to determine what kind of houses you are most likely to save, and based on them, personalize your search.
